HSS

HSS-Stähle, damit sind Schnellarbeitsstähle oder auch Warmarbeitstähle gemeint, mit denen man höhere Arbeitsgeschwindigkeiten fahren kann und dehnen die dabei erreichten höheren Arbeitstemperaturen an den Werkzeugschneiden weniger oder nichts ausmachen. Werkzeuge aus HSS-Stahl sind ein unverzichtbarer Begleiter in Handwerk, Maschinenbau, Modellbau und Industrie. Aus HSS-Stahl bestehen Bohrer, Gewindebohrer, Schneideisen, Drehstähle, Fräser und noch viele weitere Werkzeuge.

Da Werkzeuge aus HSS-Stahl hitzeunempfindlicher sind als Werkzeuge aus normalen Stahl kann man bei Temperaturen von 400-500 °C und mehr noch arbeiten, ohne das Werkzeug auszuglühen. Das funktioniert mit einem niedrieglegierten Werkzeugstahl nicht, dieser verliert seine Härte bei hohen Temperaturen, da sich der Martensitanteil wieder umwandelt. Diese Stähle sind in der Regel hochlegierte Stähle, die aufgrund der Legierungsbestandteile auch schwerer zu verarbeiten sind. Der Vorteil dieser Stähle für ein Messer ist, wenn man nicht grade bei 500°C sein Brötchen, schmiert rein akademischer Natur. Evtl. höhere Standzeiten bis zum nächsten Nachschärfen erkauft man sich dann unter umständen mit einem wesentlich schwere zu schärfenden Messer.
